HISTORY OF MARSHMALLOWS:
Historians believe that marshmallows got their name when the pharaohs of ancient Egypt discovered that part of the mallow plant grown in marshes could be made into a delicious confection. While the marshmallow name remains the same, the art of making this light, airy confection has evolved over the years. Originally, marshmallows were made by sweetening, whipping, and molding the gummy sap which was extracted from the roots for the mallow plant. The mallow root was later replaced with gelatin, which make the more stable marshmallow we know today. In the late 40's, the extrusion process was developed and this greatly speeded up marshmallow production. JET-PUFFED® Marshmallows were introduced by Kraft Foods in the early 1950's. The JET-PUFFED name was coined to describe a special new manufacturing process which infused air into the marshmallow giving it its light, fluffy texture. Today, skilled candy makers at KRAFT FOODS INC. use the same time honored recipe and processes to create JET-PUFFED Marshmallows. JET-PUFFED Marshmallows have been America's favorite for over 60 years. |
