Q: Can you provide me some information on KOOL-AID's history?
A: Kool-Aid, as it's known today, began as soft drink syrup known as Fruit Smack, and was marketed by a mail-order business called Perkins Products Company. Established in 1914 by Edwin E. Perkins of Hendley, Nebraska, Perkins Products Company offered various household remedies. In 1920, Perkins moved his company to Hastings, Nebraska, where he expanded to include manufacturing and distribution of about 125 flavorings, spices and other household products. The original syrup was improved in 1927 and then concentrated into a powder, packaged in envelopes and named Kool-Aid instant soft drink mix. The first Kool-Aid flavors that were introduced were cherry, grape, lemon-lime, orange, strawberry and raspberry In 1931, the company moved to Chicago, and began manufacturing only Kool-Aid. Since that time, Kool-Aid has been meeting the refreshment needs of both kids and adults. Currently, the Kool-Aid family of brands includes: Kool-Aid Twists, Kool-Aid Magic Twists, Kool-Aid Bursts, Kool-Aid Jammers, Kool-Aid Pops, Kool-Aid Gels, Sugar-Free Kool-Aid, and, of course, our Regular Kool Aid!
